Hami reads to Room 15

On Friday Hami from Room 4, came to read to us.

He read "Mrs Wishy-Washy and the Big Wash."

Hami did an excellent job, fabulous reading Hami.

Open Day

This week our families came to look at our work in our classroom and look at our books.

Here we are sharing our work.

Thank you for coming.

The Star Fishes

We have been learning about Matariki.

This is one of the stories about Matariki, retold by Room 15.

The Star Fishes

One day there was a mother fish with 7 little fish.  She said, "Stay near the rocks because the Giant is going out fishing today."
Artwork by:  Mackenzie, Cassie, Carlos, Amy, Manogi
The little fish played tag, but they forgot what their mother said and they played tag in the deep.

The Giant caught every single little fish in his net.

The god of light felt sorry and he threw the net up into the sky.  The little fish turned into 7 twinkling Matariki stars.

Owai Celebrates Matariki

On Friday we celebrated Matariki.

During the week we received  a pair of poutoti (stilts) to decorate for Matariki.

With help from Isabella's mum we decorated ours with 7 Matariki stars on two sides and the waves on the other sides.  The waves represent the sea where the 7 little fishes swam before they were caught by the giant.  (see our post - The Star Fishes)

After we presented these at assembly, we shared the steam pudding together .

The steam pudding was yummy!

Thank you, everyone.

Constable Rob

On Monday we were lucky to have Constable Rob come to visit us in Room 15.

He took us for a walk and we had to look out for sneaky driveways.

There's Constable Rob having a sneaky peak, down a sneaky driveway.

Did you know that when you cross at a pedestrian crossing, you are meant to walk between the white lines; that was news to us.  Walking between the white lines keeps us safe.

Next, we had to practise crossing the road by ourselves.
First, we had to stand back from the kerb.
Then, we had to check left and right for cars, before we crossed.
While we crossed the road, we had to keep looking left and right for cars.
We made sure that we crossed quickly.

Finally, we crossed on the pedestrian crossing outside Owairaka School.

Constable Rob said, that it was very important to use the pedestrian crossing.

When we got back to class, we wrote about Constable Rob.

Discovery Learning in Room 15

This morning we decided to have discover what lay hidden in Room 15.

First, we listened to a story about a dinosaur called Tyrone and his friends.  Tyrone wasn't very nice to his friends.  He always wanted to win, and so he cheated at all the games he played with his friends, he lied to his friends, he was mean to his friends, he said nasty words to his friends.   Soon his friends didn't want to play with him.

Room 15 doesn't want to be like Tyrone, we want to do the
Owai Way
and be

Co-operative

After that, we found what was hidden away in Room 15, cars & blocks, trains, dolls, tea set, links/chains, dress ups and much more.  Have a look at what we got up to.

Finally, we wrote about what we did.

We are learning to write a recount.
A recount is writing about something that has already happened.

First, we have to say when it happened, then who it was with and where it took place.  After that we wrote what we did. (This will be the longest part of our writing)  At the end we will write how we liked our experience and why we liked it.

Check out our first recounts, I think they did very well.

Well done everyone,  we will work on our ending, how and why.

If you want to see more of Room 15's writing, come in an check out our Writing Wall;
it is updated daily!

Green Day

Friday 3rd June 2016

Here we are on Green Day.

Room 15, is learning to look after its environment.
We have planted some Anemone bulbs in the garden planters outside our classroom.
We will need to remember to water them and handle them with care.

This is our poem of the week.
