from the Indian garden to our little plant boxes,

Science Week

The Egg
We put an egg into a glass of white vinegar.

Predictions:   We thought that the egg …
…  might change colour.  Drea
…  will move and wobble.  Max & Ana
…  might light up.  Anjola.
…  will crack.  Seraphina & Fatimah
…  could explode.  Kai
…  could float.   Drea

Observations:
The egg stood up tall.
The egg had tiny bubbles all around it.

The next day:
The egg was floating.
Bubbles on the top.
Brown stuff on the bubbles and the water.
More bubbles than yesterday.
The egg was bigger than yesterday.
The egg was floating on its side.

Results:
We found out that the brown stuff was the shell.  The shell had dissolved.

Salt and Pepper

What do you think will happen if we mix salt and pepper together and
put a blown balloon over top of the mixture?

Predictions:
The ballon might pop or burst.  Yasser & Anjola
The balloon might light up.  Kai
The ballon might be loud.  Kai
The salt and pepper might change colour.  Ana

Results:
The pepper jumped up onto the balloon. WOW!

What happened to the salt?

The Balloon on the Roof

How do you get a balloon to stick onto the roof of a classroom?

Materials:  You will need…
balloon
hair
roof
ladder

Method:
1.  Blow up the balloon.
2.  Rub the balloon on someones' hair.
3.  Get the ladder.
4.  Stick the balloon on the roof.
5.  Wait and watch

We tried this out on Yasser and Summer.

Results:
Yasser’s balloon stayed on the roof for 5 minutes
Summer’s balloon stayed on the roof for 20 minutes.

We found out the Summer’s balloon stayed on the roof longer than Yasser’s and we think that that is because Summer has longer hair.

What do you think?

The Dancing Raisins

Materials:  You will need…
glass, water, raisins and soda water

Method:
1.  Put the raisins in the glass.
2.  Put the water in the glass.
3.  Wait and watch.

NOTHING HAPPENED, so we tried it again with soda water.

What do you think happened?

Predictions:  The raisins ...
...   will float.  Ana
...   could crack.  Anjola.
...   might blow up.  Persaies.
...   might get bigger.  Drea
...   be a loud noise.  Tai, Seraphina, Soni
...   might change colour.  Anjola

Results:
The raisins went up and down because of the fizzy drink.  Ana
It’s because the bubbles were going up.  Anjola, Drea
Because of the fizzy water.  Soni
The raisins were floating up and down.  Persaies, Fatimah, Charity
There were too many raisins, so the bubbles couldn’t carry all the raisins up.  Anjola

Seasons

This year the Rimu Team is learning about the seasons.

Summer

Room 15 went for a walk to the gardens near the orchard and we found a deciduous tree.  This tree, over the year, will show us what happens to deciduous trees during the seasons.

Here we are in Summer.
Our tree still has green leaves on it, we can see some blue sky
and we are wearing sun hats.  These clues tell us that it is still summer.

Back in the classroom we talked about what sorts of things we can do in summer, what clothes we wear and what the weather is like.

Keep watching for our Autumn update ...
