Matariki

It's been an exciting week with Matariki - The Maori New Year.

Room 1 has been reading,
"Matariki Breakfast" with Leonie.

We found out that Matariki is a special time for us to share
traditional stories
and food,
to plant vegetables.

Room 1 has been doing just that.
We have read lots of different stories about
the 7 stars.

Together with Room 6, we have planted Sugar Snap Peas,
up by the Butterfly garden, near the strawberry patch.

Seneti and Emma working on our sign for the garden.

And we received an invitation from our buddy class Room 18,
to join them for breakfast on Monday.

Technology

This term our learning focus has been Technology.
Image result for clip art free space black and white.

We are learning to design a rocket that can fly into space.

First, we learnt about the parts of a rocket,
then we thought about what it might look like,
after that we looked at materials we could use to make it,
and at last we put it all together.

Here is some of our journey.

Unfortunately, you will have to wait for the big reveal...
... our rockets are part of our Art Exhibition for
Term 3.

We'll keep you posted....

Building a Rocket

During Play-based Learning today
Hilary, Shivani, Milo, and Claude
put together a puzzle rocket.

A Great Learner at Owai is someone who can
reflect on their learning.

"We figured out it was quite big, Claude, Hilary and Shivani helped."
Milo

"I like building the space rocket.  I like taking out the pieces. I want to be an astronaut."
Hilary

"The tricky bit was to put the back bit of the rocket together."
Claude

"The tricky bit was the window at the top, it was hard to put it in."
Shivani

When this group finished, they shared the rocket with
Tuatahi, and Rooms 4 and 5.

Rimu Cross Country

Room 1 competed extremely well in the annual
Rimu Cross Country,
we had lots of children in the top 5 placings,
in the 5 year boys and girls races.

Well done, Room 1.

Angela, Brooklyn, and Sione all came in the top three.
Good on you!

Rocket Science!

Room 1 has been making paper rockets.

We made them fly by blowing into the straw at the back of the rocket.

Question
How can we make our rockets go further?

We looked to see if our answers were correct.

What do you think?

Question
How can we make our rockets go higher?

What do you think we did?

Play-based Learning

A Great Learner at Owairaka:
is able to share and discuss their ideas.

"I made a house and it has a roof, it has a square,
a triangle for the roof, it has a blue rectangle for the road
and a yellow rectangle for the path.

"What can you see Thaddeus?"
"I can see the sun."

"The green square and the blue triangle is the chicken coup.
The yellow rectangle is some wooden fence
and the red triangle is the top of the fence. "

"This is my house.  The blue rectangle is the fence.
The yellow square is the sun and the green is the moon.
The sun is shining down and the moon is coming."   Emma
