Māori Language Week - September 12 - 19

This year is extra special as 14 September marks the 50th anniversary of the Māori Language Petition when 33,000 New Zealanders signed the Māori Language Petition and it was presented to Parliament by artist and activist Tama Iti. This resulted in Te Reo becoming an official language of New Zealand in 1987.  It is hard to believe that not too many years ago, Māori children were punished for speaking their own language at school.  Thankfully, Te reo Māori is gaining more and more recognition and exposure. We hear it everywhere and it is just a normal part of our everyday life. We are proud that this week our country is celebrating our unique and beautiful taonga - te reo Māori.

This week in Room 1, our Te Reo phrase is a reply to

"Kei te pehea koe?"
How are you?

  1. Kia ora Ruma Tahi, thank your for sharing your language learning with us. I encourage you to practise your te reo every day. I find the more I practise the easier it is to remember. You can do it!
