Problem Solving with Yummy Stickers

We have been practising how to solve a maths problem.

Here's a real problem we had last Friday, this was tricky for Year 1's.

Problem:
We have got 97 stickers on our Yummy Chart.  The Yummy Chart has 100 spaces on it.

Question:
How many more stickers do we need to make 100?

Clues:
We had a look at the Problem and found these number clues.  97, 100.
We found the word more and thought that this meant that we had to add
something. +

Think Time:
We looked at the chart and also the 100's board.

Buddy Share & Feedback:
Raksha looked at the 100's board and counted 1, 2, 3. We need 3 more stickers.

Charity and Betty looked at the 100's board and counted 1, 2, 3 in their heads.  We need 3 more.

Anjola and Kai knew that 97 + 3 = 100.  They saw 97 in their heads and 3 spaces and knew it would be 100.

We did need 3 more Yummy stickers to make 100.

Number sentence:
97 + 3 = 100

And guess what?
We now have 100 stickers on our Yummy Sticker Chart.
Keep bringing in those Yummy Stickers.  I wonder if we will get to 200, before the end of the year?

  1. Hi, Room 15! It took me a long time to look at your blog, but I'm glad I did. What a cool class. You must be very clever to be counting to 100! I like how you are using stickers to help your counting. Some very good thinking going on. I'll be back to check out your blog more often.
